It depends on the country. In the UK, adults can be assessed by a practitioner psychologist registered with the HCPC or a specialist teacher assessor holding an Assessment Practising Certificate.[1][2] In the United States, licensed professionals such as clinical psychologists and neuropsychologists do it, under rules that vary by state.[3] It is usually not a medical doctor.[4]

Who is allowed to identify dyslexia is set by national rules, professional bodies and, in some places, licensing law. Before you book, it helps to know which kind of professional your college, employer or exam body will accept, because a report accepted for one purpose may not be accepted for another. For school-level exams in England, for example, the Joint Council for Qualifications says a diagnosis alone does not entitle a candidate to access arrangements and that the exam center makes the decision.[5]

United Kingdom

Two professions can diagnose in the UK. The BDA says both psychologists and specialist teachers can give a diagnosis, and that a psychologist may be the better choice where needs are more complex or several conditions may be involved.[12]

Specialist teacher assessors show their standing with an Assessment Practising Certificate (APC). SASC lists three bodies that award it (the BDA, the Dyslexia Guild and PATOSS) and says the certificate has to be renewed every three years; psychologists are referred to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) register instead.[1] SASC keeps a national register of specialist teacher assessors with a current APC.[13] Student funding rules in England accept either profession: GOV.UK names practitioner psychologists and suitably qualified specialist teachers as the people whose diagnostic reports count for Disabled Students' Allowance.[2]

In England, the NHS says dyslexia assessment is not done by a medical doctor.[4] Dyslexia Scotland prefers to talk about assessing or identifying dyslexia rather than diagnosing it, which is why Scottish pages may use different wording for the same process.[14]

United States

An LD OnLine article on adult assessment lists clinical psychologists, neuropsychologists, and school or educational psychologists with the right qualifications among the professionals who can diagnose a learning disability, and says licensure requirements depend on the role and the state.[3] The same article says educational specialists, counselors, social workers, speech-language specialists and occupational therapists cannot make that diagnosis, and that accommodation documentation should come from a specialist licensed to diagnose.[3] It is an older article, so check current rules in your state.

The Learning Disabilities Association of America advises choosing someone with experience assessing adults, and suggests asking how many adults they have tested and who will see the results.[6] Understood.org lists university clinics and psychology departments, state vocational rehabilitation agencies, and local LDA chapters as places adults can look.[15]

Universities spell out what they accept. The University of Pennsylvania's documentation guidelines list clinical and educational psychologists, school psychologists, neuropsychologists and medical physicians, each with added training in assessing adolescents and adults, and ask the report to state the evaluator's license or certification.[16] The same guidelines say professionals should not evaluate members of their own families, and that testing for adults should be from the past five years and use tests normed on adults.[16] Other universities set their own rules, so check with the one you plan to use.[17]

Ireland, Canada and Australia

Dyslexia Ireland says its assessments are carried out by a team of psychologists, and that there is no free state assessment for adults.[7] Ontario restricts the task by law: communicating a diagnosis is a controlled act there, so an older LDAO FAQ says it falls to psychologists and psychological associates on the College of Psychologists of Ontario register; check that current rules still match.[9] SPELD NSW in Australia says dyslexia is diagnosed by a psychologist, and gives the clinical name as specific learning disorder in reading (the term used in clinical manuals).[10]

Questions to ask any assessor

Before you book

  1. What is your professional registration or certificate, and is it current?
  2. How many adults have you assessed for dyslexia?
  3. Will the report be accepted by my college, employer or exam body?
  4. Who will have access to my results?
  5. Will I get a written report, and when?

Quick answers

Can a GP or family doctor diagnose dyslexia?

Not in England. The NHS points adults to educational psychologists and dyslexia specialists instead of doctors.[4]

Is a specialist teacher assessment as valid as a psychologist assessment?

In the UK, the BDA says both can diagnose dyslexia, and GOV.UK accepts either for student funding in England.[12][2] A psychologist may be preferred when several conditions may be involved.[12]

Can a speech-language pathologist diagnose dyslexia in adults?

According to an LD OnLine article on US adult assessment, speech-language specialists are not among the professionals who can diagnose a learning disability for accommodation purposes; licensing rules vary by state.[3]

Where can adults find an assessor?

In the UK, SASC keeps a register of specialist teacher assessors with a current APC.[13] In the US, Understood.org points to university clinics, vocational rehabilitation agencies and LDA chapters.[15]
